This is a fort side view of the sentry box at Fort Matanzas. Known as a bartizan, or garita, the cylindrical sentry box and domed roof are completely made of masonry. The sentry box is positioned at the corners of the fortification and is protected from three sides. Its position at the corner of the fortification, allow for a single sentry man to have an unobstructed view down the outer length of two separate battlement walls.
