Sinkhole at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens

Sinkhole at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens

This photograph of a sinkhole was taken at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. This sinkhole occurred due to limestone bedrock being dissolved by carbonic acid over a period of time. The carbonic acid percolated through the soil via rainfall; as rain falls, it picks up atmospheric carbon dioxide in which a reaction occurs that produces a weak solution of carbonic acid.
