The Artwork on the Pendentives Flanking the Ponce de Leon Archway
These pendentives are painted and gilded, with lyres, and human figures. The artist was George W. Maynard. The human figures may represent the elements (air, fire, earth, or water), or the phases of Spanish exploration (adventure, discovery, conquest, or civilization). There also appears to be a reference to four of Spain's provinces (Girona, Alicante, Castellón, and the Balearic Islands). Finally, the name of Ponce de Leon appears over one of the wooden arches.Galleries:Misc Painting Subjects, St. Augustine, St. JohnsKeywords:balearic islands, george w maynard, hotel ponce de leon, pendentives, ponce de leon, province of alicante, province of castellon, province of girona, saint augustine, st. augustinePhoto Location: St. Augustine, FloridaPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 10/08/2011Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark IIExposure Time: 0.0166667F Number: 4Original Dimensions: 5616×3744Picture Orientation: LandscapeGPS Coordinates: 29°53'39.35"N 81°18'47.55"WPicture Number: 18436
