View of an Exterior Sentry Box at Fort Matanzas

View of an Exterior Sentry Box at Fort Matanzas

This is a view of the bartizan that was used as a sentry box, at Fort Matanzas. The sentry box or garita, an architectural feature of Spanish Caribbean forts, had fallen off sometime during the 1800s while Fort Matanzas sat abandoned. It was rebuilt of brick in 1927 and again of coquina in 1929 using steel reinforcing rods to attach it to the existing parapet walls. The bartizan is cylindrical, with a domed roof. The fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as Fort Matanzas National Monument.
