George Washington as a young boy caught in the act of chopping down the cherry tree. This story first appeared in Parson Weems' Life of Washington, but has not been verified in any other source. According to Weems, the confrontation between the young Washington and his father took place inside their house and George is reported to have said, "I can't tell a lie, Pa; you know I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet."
