A Panoramic View of the Quarai Mission and Surrounding Historic Site
Pictured is a panoramic view of the ruins at the Pueblo of Quarai. Straight ahead one can see the best preserved of the Spanish churches that were local to the area, El Misión Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Cuarac. Completed c.1629, Quarai would serve as the epicenter of the Spanish Inquisition in New Mexico until 1674, when droughts and repeated Apache attacks caused the abandonment of the mission. To the left one can make out the ruins of the Pueblo village and the unfinished Spanish church, to the right of the larger church one can see the convento ruins. A winding trail moves behind and away towards the corral trail area.
