Pulse Rates

Appleworks will help you use the scientific process to answer the question, "How will the intensity of exercise effect your heart rate?"

Objectives

  • Students will know that the human body is made of systems with structures and functions that are related by studying the relationship between the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems.
  • Student will use the scientific process by doing the pulse rate experiment.
  • Students will analyze real-world data to recognize patterns and relationships by comparing data on graphs generated by a computer.
  • Students will know that to compare and contrast observations and results is an essential skill in science by writing a conclusion connecting data and research.

Procedure

  • Generate a hypothesis.
  • Research exercise and heart rates.
  • During PE collect data and enter it into the worksheet.
  • Generate a graph and write a results and conclusion statement based on the data collection and research.

  • Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
  • Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of electronic information sources.

  • Appleworks or a spreadsheet program
  • Stopwatch

  • Any experiment could be done and a spreadsheet could be used to collect data and generate graphs.
