Fraction and Decimal Review Podcast

Students will use Use iPod, iTalk, iTunes, Garageband, and Keynote to create podcasts of student-created review questions.

Objectives

  • Students will create and solve problems.
  • Students will write and edit detailed scripts of their problem solving procedure.
  • Students will record their written scripts.

Procedure

  • List topics covered on board or other centralized location. In this lesson the focus is fractions and decimals (the basic operations, conversions, etc.) but could be applied to other areas and units of math.
  • Have students sign up for topics, one that they feel very confident in and another that they know they struggle with.
  • Have students create and solve problems for each of their topics. Check in on their progress from time to time to assure they are headed in the right direction.
  • Have students create written, detailed scripts of how they solved their problems.
  • Go through the editing process with these scripts until they are acceptable (this is truly up to the teacher). I focused on content, presentation and correctness when my students went through the process.
  • As students complete their scripts, have them take an iPod with iTalk attachment to a quiet place and instruct them how to record their scripts. Once they have a first take, have students listen to their recording.
  • At this point, students (and teacher) may want to reevaluate the script, the recording, or even the problem that the student created until the final product is acceptable.
    done by teacher:
  • Import the Voice Messages from the iPod into iTunes, convert them to AAC format.
  • Open Garageband, create a new podcast, import the AAC audio file.
  • Open Keynote, create slides showing student problem solving steps.
  • Export slides as jpegs from Keynote, import into iPhoto, back in Garageband import photos.
  • In Garageband, edit audio file and Keynote images until they are in sync with each other. Add sounds, clapping, musical introduction to spice it up.
  • Export either to iTunes or iWeb and you have an instant Podcast!
