Description: "The war in Virginia. General Meade recrossing the Rappahannock, October, 1863, before Lee's advance. General Meade, whose forces had been weakened to reinforce the Army of the Cumberland, was no longer in a condition to hold the position so long and so often occupied by the Federal army, and on October 10th began to fall back toward Washington, covering his retrograde movement so completely that General Lee was foiled in all his attempts to gain his rear, annoy his flanks or crush his rear guard. Our artist shows his army recrossing the Rappahannock."— Frank Leslie, 1896
