Monreale cathedral, bronze doors of Bonannus of Pisa, Creation of Adam

Monreale cathedral, bronze doors of Bonannus of Pisa, Creation of Adam

The bronze doors of the west entrance of Monreale cathedral were signed and dated (1186) by Bonannus of Pisa who also made two sets of doors for Pisa Cathedral. Twenty Old Testament scenes occupy the five lower rows and twenty New Testament scenes the upper five rows. This panel begins the narrative with the Creation of Adam. It is the first panel in the lowest row of scenes on the left door and it is followed by the Creation of Eden with a visually similar composition. The titulus, based on Genesis 2: 7 reads, “D(omi)n(u)s plasmaui(t) Ada(m) ex limo tere,” “God created Adam from the mud of the earth.” D'Emilio photo archive no. s19781118_2066u (13.4.17/JD)
