"A Retort is a vessel in whose chamber an object is subjected to distillation or decomposition by heat, a neck conducting off the volatile products. The retort of the chemical laboratory is a vessel of glass, platinum, porcelain, or other material. It is bottle-shaped, having a long neck attached, in which the products of the distillation are condensed, and from which they pass into the receiver. The retort of the gas works is a cylinder or segment of a cylinder, formed of clay or iron."—(Charles Leonard-Stuart, 1911)

Laboratory preparation of sulphur trioxide, an important step in the process of making sulphuric acid. "Sulphur (a) burns in the air drawn into the apparatus by an aspirator, and thte sulphur dioxide formed passes with the excess of air into the U-tube (b) which is filled with some loose material to rid the gases of sulphur dust. In the bottle (c) the gases lose their moisture as they make their way through the flass beads drenched with concentrated sulphuric acid. The patinized asbestos in the tube (d) is gently heated, and brings about the union of the sulphur dioxide with the oxygen of the air. The sulphur trioxide resulting from the action is absorbed by concentrated sulphuric acid trickling down through the apparatus (e)." -Brownlee 1907

"The Leyden jar and discharger. Its discovery is attributed to the attempt of Musschenbrock and his pupil Cuneus to collect the supposed electric 'fluid' in a bottle half filled with water. The bottle was held in the hand and was povided with a nail to lead the 'fluid' down through the cork to the water from the electric machine. The invention of the Leyden jar is also claimed by Kleist, Bishop of Pomerania." -Hawkins, 1917

"Draw out a piece of glass tubing to a jet, and push it through a perforation in a cork that snugly fits a bottle. Slip a short piece of snugly fitting rubber tubing over the outer end of the glass tubing, and insert the cork so that the jet shall project into the bottle. Remove by suction as much air as possible, pinch the rubber tubing tightly, place it under water, and remove the pressure. Something will force the water into the bottle, forming the 'fountain in vacuo' as shown." -Avery 1895
