Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, capital frieze, Massacre of the Innocents and Flight into Egypt
The figure in the outer left archivolt represents the month of July: a man wearing a cap cuts a sheaf of grain with a sickle. The capital frieze shows an extended scene of the Massacre of the Innocents. King Herod is prominently displayed on the outer face of the inner capital above a decorated colonnette. He is crowned, sits crosslegged and holds a sword upright in his right hand. The Flight into Egypt is shown on the inner face of the inner capital: Mary rides a donkey holding the bundled child Jesus, and Joseph leads the way. By their placement, they appear to move towards the safety of the church and away from the gruesome depiction of the Massacre, on the same capital.
