Chartres Cathedral, Incarnation portal, capital frieze, right side, outer face
On the right side of the Incarnation portal, the prominent scenes on the outer faces of the capitals represent episodes that followed Jesus’ resurrection. The middle capital shows Jesus’ supper with the disciples at Emmaus. On the outermost capital, Jesus shows his wounds to St. Thomas who doubted his appearance after death. The last figures may represent the mission of the apostles. Above, the lowest two figures in the archivolts are thought to be Pythagoras and one of the Latin grammarians, Priscian or Donatus, shown as representatives of Music and Grammar in the cycle of the Seven Liberal Arts. On the lintel, an angel leads the shepherds to adore the Christ child.
