Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, scenes of Jesus’ Passion, third and fourth rows of left door
The third and fourth rows (from the top) of scenes on the left door continue the story of Jesus’ life with the events leading to Jesus’ Passion and death. In the third row (the top in this picture), the scenes are, from left to right, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, acclaimed by the people; Jesus washing the feet of the apostles at the Last Supper; and the Last Supper. The striking placement of Jesus washing the apsotle’s feet with his back turned to the viewer emphasizes his humility, one of the lessons of the biblical storyIn the next row, the scenes break the narrativee sequence and the central panel shows the last – but most important – scene of the series, Jesus carrying the cross among figures who may be identified as Jews by their conical caps. The scene on the left shows the Arrest of Jesus, while that on the right shows Jesus before Pontius Pilate, with two figures representing the Jews accusing him at the right. All but the first of these scenes were executed in the early twelfth century by the first of two principal artists responsible for the doors; the scene of the Entry into Jerusalem, however, was executed by the second artist of the late twelfth century.
