Cefalù cathedral, mosaics, apse wall, Mary and archangel Gabriel

Below the Pantocrator in the semidome of the apse at Cefalù, the four archangels, Raphael, Michael, Gabriel and Uriel flank Mary. The Archangel Gabriel (shown here) is placed next to Mary in a manner evocative of the familiar scene of the Annunciation. The contrast in size and scale between the rows of figures on the apse wall and the Pantocrator above is easily scene by comparing the size of the fingers of the Pantocrator (or the lettering in his book) with the figures below. The mosaic was completed by the time of the dated mosaic inscription of 1148. D'Emilio photo archive no. s19780710_1916u (13.4.20/JD)
