Rome, Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, apse mosaic, Christ in glory, St. Peter and two saints
Christ stands in glory amidst the clouds in the center of the apse mosaic of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere (817-824). He raises his right hand in blessing, holds a scroll in his left, and has a golden halo with a jewelled cross within. Above him, a hand descends from heaven with a wreath-crown. To the right, St. Peter leads two saints, each holding a crown in veiled hands. The man – with no tonsure – may be Valerianus, Cecilia’s husband with whom she lived in a chaste marriage. In the legendary lives of St. Cecilia, she was said to have converted her husband and he participated in the burial of Christian martyrs and was eventually martyred. The female saint may be St. Agatha (Goodson [2010], p. 152), the other female patron of the monastery that Pope Paschal I established at the church of Santa Cecilia.
