Rome, Santa Prassede, apse mosaic, procession of lambs, city of Bethlehem, inscription
At the base of the apse mosaic of Santa Prassede (817-824),, a procession of twelve lambs comes from two cities. In the center, a lamb with a halo stands above an image of the four rivers of Paradise. It was common in early Christian art to use the lambs as figures for Christ and the twelve apostles. The stylized representations of cities are usually associated with Bethlehem and Jerusalem, the cities of Jesus’ birth and crucifixion.
