Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, beheading of John the Baptist
This is a detail of the scene of the beheading of John the Baptist, one of three scenes on the twelfth-century bronze doors of San Zeno depicting the execution of the saint and its aftermath. Here, John’s head is being carried away for presentation to King Herod at his banquet. This panel is generally attributed to the earlier of two principal artists, an early twelfth-century artist responsible for most of the scenes of the Life of Jesus on the left or north door.
