Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, six panels, King Nebuchadnezzar and the fiery furnace, two scenes of St. Zeno, Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac, Noah’s ark, and St. Michael and the dragon
These are the two lowest of the eight rows of panels on the right or south door of San Zeno. Like the three scenes of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel in the lowest row on the left door, the three Old Testament scenes (Nebuchadnezzar, Abraham and Isaac, and Noah’s ark) are the remains of an Old Testament cycle by the early twelfth-century artist responsible for the Life of Jesus on the left door. He also made the scene of St. Michael and the dragon. That first Old Testament cycle was apparently replaced by an extended cycle in the upper rows of the right door, attributed to the second artist, later in the twelfth century. The two scenes of the life of St. Zeno (the miracle of the cart, and St. Zeno with the Emperor Gallienus) and the figure of the sculptor at the left are also among the later panels on the doors.
