Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, St. Michael and the dragon
This is the popular scene of St. Michael the Archangel in combat with a dragon. Among the forty-eight panels on the twelfth-century bronze doors of San Zeno, this is one of the few dedicated to scenes of saints – the others are two sets of scenes relating to St. John the Baptist and St. Zeno, the church’s patron saint. This panel is generally attributed to the earlier of two principal artists, an early twelfth-century artist responsible for most of the scenes of the Life of Jesus on the left or north door.
