View One of Matanzas River Inlet and Fort Matanzas, from the Southeast

This is a view of Fort Matanzas located on Rattlesnake Island as seen from the southeast. The fort is 50 feet on each side with a 30-foot tower, it was built of local shellstone called coquina. Lime for the mortar was made by burning oyster shells. There are four cannons on the gundeck. The fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as Fort Matanzas National Monument.
