Leaves of a yaupon (Ilex vomitoria) plant at Gainesville's Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. The leaves of this plant contain caffeine, and have been used as a beverage, a cold remedy, a diuretic, and in the treatment of diabetes, gout, small pox, and kidney stones. Native Americans dried the leaves over a fire and made a strong brew (black drink) that was consumed for ceremonial purposes.Galleries:Alachua, Gainesville, Hollies, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, Medicinal PlantsKeywords:Gainesville attraction, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, North Florida Botanical Society, garden, holly, ilex, ilex vomitoria, medicinal plant, yauponPhoto Location: Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, Gainesville, FLPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 11/25/2008Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon PowerShot A560Exposure Time: 1/80F Number: 26/10Original Dimensions: 3072×2304Picture Orientation: LandscapeGPS Coordinates: 29°36'44.21"N 82°24'32.13"WPicture Number: 2888
