Belarus Wheat Doll with Long Fiber Braid (Back View)

Belarus Wheat Doll with Long Fiber Braid (Back View)

Belarusian female doll made out of woven straw. She has fiber hair that is braided in the back and tied with red ribbons. The doll's head is a wood ball, and the facial features are hand painted. The remainder of the figurine is made entirely with elaborate patterns of wheat. Her apron, vest, and headband are woven, and the arms are spirals. Artists in Belarus have long been known for their extraordinary craftsmanship for weaving straw into intricate figures and figurines. They begin by gathering rye, oats, barley and triticale in the fall. Then the straw is dried, peeled, and cut into different lengths. Finally, the straw is steamed in hot water until it become soft and flexible enough for weaving. The figure stands 13 inches (33 cm) tall.
