Language Arts

Senate Bill 1908 enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida in July 1, 2008, instructed the State Board of Education to review the Sunshine State Standards and replace them with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

In November of 2008 The Florida Department of Education convened a group of K-16 Florida reading, media, and language arts educators to draft the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Language Arts. Right after the concluding July 2009 meeting of this committee, the Florida Department of Education announced its intention to join the beginning national efforts of writing and adopting a set of national Common Core Standards in Language Arts, and its 2009 drafting efforts were temporarily suspended to accommodate this new national effort.

From late July 2009 through February 2010, the Florida Department of Education, along with other selected state departments of education, provided feedback and recommendations to this national standards writing committee which was convened jointly by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, in partnership with Act, Inc and other educational organizations.

After publication of the final draft of the national Common Core Standards in Language Arts in March 2010, Florida will convene a committee to compare the final Common Core Standards in Language Arts document to Florida's original 2009 draft and make recommendations regarding the comparison. After public review in the spring, the final draft of Florida's Next Generation Standards in Language Arts will be presented to the State Board for adoption in July 2010. The implementation timeline for these new standards will be announced soon after their adoption.
