View of a village in the Schwartzwald, or Black Forest. The Black Forest stands in the elbow formed by the Rhine river in its course from Schaffhausen to Basle, and from Basle to Mannheim. It is bounded by the plain that borders the river The Neckar River bounds it on the north, while on the east it is limited by the upper part of the same river, and by an imaginary line drawn from the source of the Neckar to Schaffhausen. The Black Forest owes its gloomy name to the dark aspect of its peaks and slopes which is shadowed by pine-trees. On the brightest day the forest's trees still retain their shadow.

A goatherd or a goat herder is a person who herds goats for a living. Similar to a shepherd who tends sheep for a living, the drover here herds goats. Shown here is a mountainous hut a typical living space for the goat herder. Selecting a place where large rocks have fallen, the goatherd places trunks of trees across the top, creating a roof. Over this he places boughs of green creating protection for his herd from rain or snow. A trait peculiar to a goat is their ability to foretell the approach of a storm. Herding a goat is much more difficult than herding sheep as, unlike sheep, goats do not have a herding instinct and each goat will tend to stray farther in search of better foliage and grass.

Wilbad Kreuth is a quiet little town located in the mountains of Bavaria. Early in the sixteenth century, possibly in the latter part of the fifteenth century, the place where the modern town or village now stands was owned by the Abbey of Terganese, and the invalid monks of the brotherhood came from distant monasteries to for their health. They drank in the invigorating air from the mountains, and read their missal under the shade of the trees in the valley. In the Emperor's day the little town became a miniature court with many coming for the health benefits they believed it offered.

An insect known as the pigeon horntail (Tremex columba) deposits its eggs, by means of a strong, piercing ovipositor, half an inch deep in the trunk wood of growing trees. Female uses ovipositor to bore through bark into wood, depositing 1 slender egg in each hole. Eggs are covered with fungal spores from a special pocket in female's abdomen. After depositing the last egg, the female often dies without removing its ovipositor from the wood. The dead female becomes food for some insectivorous animal.

The Manchineel tree (Hippomane mancinella) is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), native to Florida in the United States, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. The name "manchineel" (sometimes written "manchioneel") as well as the specific epithet mancinella is from Spanish manzanilla ("little apple"), from the superficial resemblance of its fruit and leaves those of an apple tree. A present-day Spanish name is in fact manzanilla de la muerte, "little apple of death". This refers to the fact that manzanilla is one of the most poisonous trees in the world

An illustration of branch of mangrove; a, flowers; b, a flower laid open; c, pistil; d, trichoblast in bark highly magnified. Mangroves (generally) are trees and shrubs that grow in saline (brackish) coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics. The word is used in at least three senses: (1) most broadly to refer to the habitat and entire plant assemblage or mangal, for which the terms mangrove swamp and mangrove forest are also used, (2) to refer to all trees and large shrubs in the mangal, and (3) narrowly to refer to the mangrove family of plants, the Rhizophoraceae, or even more specifically just to mangrove trees of the genus Rhizophora. Mangals are found in depositional coastal environments where fine sediments, often with high organic content, collect in areas protected from high energy wave action.

It breeds in open woodland with some tall trees from Mexico south to Bolivia and Argentina, and on Trinidad. The nest, built by the female, is an open saucer of sticks. The typical clutch is two or three whitish eggs heavily blotched with brown. These are incubated mostly by the female for 17-18 days with a further 24 days to fledging.

The hammock is used for swinging, sleeping, or resting, made of a fabric sling suspended or stretched between two points. It normally consists of one or more cloth panels, or a woven network of twine or thin rope stretched with ropes between two firm anchor points such as trees or posts. Hammocks were developed by native inhabitants of tropical regions for sleeping. Later, they were used aboard ships by sailors to enable comfort and maximize available space, and by explorers or soldiers traveling in wooded regions.
