India Tanjore Dancing Doll Made from Ceramics (Profile View)

India Tanjore Dancing Doll Made from Ceramics (Profile View)

Three part ceramic dancing doll from Thanjavur/Tanjore in India. A Tanjore doll is known as a traditional bobblehead -- in this case, the doll has three parts, the head, body, and legs. Each part balances on top of the other, creating an oscillating, dancing motion when tilted or disturbed. To help preserve the heritage, it has been given Geographical Indicator status by Government of India for its origin in culture rich Thanjavur. This handcrafted doll has a painted blue face and high headpiece. She has long black string hanging down her back from the crown. Her dress is bell-shaped and painted in bright colors. She is barefoot, and her hands are held in a dancing pose -- each in the opposite direction. The figure stands 17 inches (43 cm) tall.
