Settled by Roger Williams at Providence 1636. Island of Aquidneck (Rhode Island) bought from Indians 1638, and Newport and Portsmouth founded. Lands of Narragansett Indians acquired by purchase 1709. Last of the thirteen Colonies to ratify the Constitution, which it did in 1790." — Edison, 1898.
