Description: " Russo-Japanese War, a war between Russia and Japan, beginning in February, 1904, and continuing until September, 1905. The chief cause of the conflict was RussiaÕs attempt to gain control of Manchuria and Korea, and thus make its position in the Far East so strong that it could dominate Japan. At the close of the war between China and Japan in 1895, Japan had won control of Formosa and Liao-tung Peninsula, including Port Arthur. The leading European nations, however, forced Japan to cede Liao-tung back to China, and Russia immediately leased this peninsula. Russia had already gained control of Sakhalin Island, had completed the Trans-Siberian Railway and established ports at Vladivostok and Port Arthur, notwithstanding the repeated protests of Japan, which saw its very existence threatened by these movements.
