Description: A map from 1901 of the world showing colonial possessions at the time, principal steamship routes, and submarine cables and telegraph lines. The map is color–coded to show the possessions of Great Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, and the United States. The map shows political boundaries, capitals, major cities and ports, railroads, canals, steamship routes, and caravan routes. Major ports are indicated with a red dot, with the steamship routes between these ports given in geographical or nautical miles. Only the navigable portions of rivers are shown. Due to the nature of map distortion, a scale at the bottom of the map converts geographic miles measures at the equator, on the 30th Parallel, and on the 60th Parallel. The Roman Numerals at the bottom of the map indicate hours based on noon (XII) at Greenwich. The International Date Line is given for shipping purposes along the 180 Meridian, and the adjusted date line used to maintain island group and territorial integrity.
