Description: A facsimile of the known world according to Ptolemy (Orbis Veteribus Notus) as given in Murray's Encyclopædia of Geography (1838). This map shows the Fortunatæ Insula (Canary Islands) where the island of Ferro, being the western–most known land, was used as the Prime Meridian by Ptolemy. A map key gives the locations of important cities numerically, and important rivers alphabetically. Place names are given in common Latin form. The map is on a scale which allows only an outline of Ptolemy's System.
