Description: A map from 1888 of the southern hemisphere showing areas of typical barometric pressures and wind directions in January and July. On this map, prevailing winds for each season is given with the arrows flying in the direction of flow. Isobars, or lines drawn through places of equal atmospheric pressure are also shown, the isobars denoting the mean or a high pressure (30 inches or over) being drawn in red, while isobars of low pressure (less than 30 inches) are drawn in blue. As can be seen from the map, winds generally blow from areas of high pressure toward areas of low pressure. "The constant winds are more plainly marked in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere, because there is but little land in the south temperate zone to become in turn hotter and colder than the surrounding ocean as the seasons change, and thus to modify the direction of the winds. [...] It is seen that a belt of high pressure lies over each of the oceans in about 30° latitude in January, while in July this belt of high pressure almost encircles the hemisphere in this latitude. The winds blow obliquely out from these regions of high pressure, forming the trade winds on the equatorial side, and the antitrade winds on the polar side." — Hinman, 1888, p. 84.
