The Norfolk Naval Yard, also known as the Norfolk Naval Shipyard became an integral shipyard during the Civil War. In 1861, Virginia joined the Confederate States of America. The shipyard commander feared that the Confederacy would take control of the shipyard so he ordered it to be burned.
