Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, first six panels of the Old Testament, Scenes from Genesis

Verona, San Zeno, bronze doors, first six panels of the Old Testament, Scenes from Genesis

The two top rows of scenes on the right door have the first six of a set of fifteen scenes from the Old Testament on that door. These were executed in the late twelfth century by the second of two principal artists responsible for the doors. Five panels with Old Testament scenes by the first artist were used in the lowest rows of the two doors. In the top row, the scenes are, from left to right: the creation of Eve and temptation by the serpent, both in a single panel; Adam and Eve hiding their nakedness and condemned by God to labor because of their sin; and the Expulsion of Adam and Eve – now wearing the garments of skins which God provided -- from the Garden of Eden by a sword-wielding angel. In the second row, the scenes are, from left to right: the sacrifices of Cain and Abel and Cain slaying Abel, shown in two rows in one panel; Noah’s ark upon the flood waters with a dove returning to the ark with an olive branch (Genesis 7:11); and Noah’s sons covering their father’s nakedness and, below, Noah cursing Canaan, the son of Ham, and condemning that line of descent to be enslaved to the others, because Ham had looked upon his nakedness. The figures in the small panels in the left are St. Peter, holding keys, and St. Paul, whose name is incised upon the scroll he holds D'Emilio photo archive no. s19772902_979au (13.05.31/JD)
