Description: "The function of rivers is to drain the land. More water evaporates from the sea than from the land, but in proportion to its area more rain and snow fall on the land, especially on the mountains. More water falls upon the continents than is evaporated from them, and the surplus runs back to the sea in rivers. Most rivers must therefore empty their waters into the sea either directly or as tributaries to those which flow into the ocean." (— Brewer, 1890) Source: William H.
