Plows used to dig sweet potatoes. "The long vines must be first disposed of. They are usually pulled by running a plow on each side of the row. This work is done much more satisfactorily if the line of plants be barred off with a turn-plow, to the beam of which is attached a rolling coulter, which cuts the vines close to the row." —Dugger 1911

A scriber block is used to layout lines at a set height from the base, thus its second name surface height gauge or just "surface gauge".

The work piece is held against an angle plate so that it is perpendicular to the surface plate, the scriber block is then adjusted to the required height and used to scribe a line parallel with the table, by sliding the block along the table's surface.

The pug is a breed of small, short-haired lap dogs, probably of Oriental origin, and introduced into Europe by way of Holland in the sixteenth century. The breed is characterized by the shortness of the face and uplifted form of nose. Only a fawn color, with blackish face, was known until about 1875, when a wholly black variety was introduced into the West from China. The pug is essentially a house dog, good-tempered and affectionate. Unless restrained, it becomes extremely fat. Its weight should not exceed fifteen pounds; its form should be compact and elegant, though robust, with straight legs, the face much wrinkled and forehead high, the coat smooth and silky, and the tail always tightly curled over the hip. The face and thin, small ears should be black, and in the fawn-colored breed a blackish line should run along the spine.

A secant is "a line which cuts a figure in any way. Specifically, in trigonometry, a line from the center of a circle through one extremity of an arc (whose secant it is said to be) to the tangent from the other extremity of the same arc; or the ratio of this line to the radius; the reciprocal of the cosine. The ratio of AB to AD is the secant of the angle A; and AB is the secant of the arc CD." —Whitney, 1889
