This gallery contains 189 pictures of maple trees. Maple trees are classified in both the Aceraceae and Sapindaceae families. All maple species except the box elder (Acer negundo) have distinct palmate leaves as featured on the national flag of Canada. The fruits of maple trees are referred to as samaras. The samara is a winged seed that autorotates away from the tree with wind gusts. Maple flowers usually have 4 or 5 separate petals as well as 4 or 5 separate sepals. Commercial maple syrup is tapped from the sugar maple (Acer saccharum).
