Chapter 17: Arithmetic in the School

The community is interrupted during their first evening together by the arrival of Hollingsworth and a mysterious stranger.
The author’s dangerous voyage. He arrives at New Holland, hoping to settle there. Is wounded with an arrow by one of the natives. Is seized and carried by force into a Portuguese ship. The great civilities of the captain. The author arrives at England.
A king is determined to have a child, so his queen sees an old woman who helps her to bear a child through enchantment. There are limitations—the king and queen cannot see their child until she is fourteen. The king decides to break this rule of the contract, and the princess dies. He is then forced to put her body in the church with a sentinel standing guard. However, finding a sentinel starts to become a challenge when those who volunteer disappear. A young smith who wishes to show his bravery is the first to last the night, and his drunken bravery earns him rewards.
Hilda laments her current situation.
Phoebe takes Clifford to the front window to gaze at the street outside. Clifford is horrified at an organ-grinder’s monkey. Phoebe goes to church and, though they dress and attempt to go, Clifford and Hepzibah realize that they cannot go any farther.
Toad continues to make his way home, but once again finds trouble behind the wheel of an automobile.
Rose struggles through disagreements with her aunt during a letter writing session. Rose questions Captain Spike, speaks with Mulford, and takes a liking to Jack Tier.
Mark and Ruth sailed on the Wildfire. The ship catches fire and all must escape on pilot boats. They watch the Wildfire’s destruction. The kids go to New York and see their uncle.
With the intensity of the storm increasing, the four men lash themselves to the hull in order to survive.
Hump receives his dried clothing, but notices that some valuably articles are now missing, resulting in an altercation with Mugridge. A misstep while performing his duties aboard ship, results in violence towards Hump. Hump informs Captain Larsen of his missing money, but is only chastised for his irresponsibility and later presented with some of the captains philosophy.
David and Miss Betsey are told Little Em'ly's story. Mr. Peggotty and Little Em'ly decide to leave.
The author permitted to see the grand academy of Lagado. The academy largely described. The arts wherein the professors employ themselves.
After the storms dies down, Maud Brewster joins the sailors for the evening meal, where she makes a request of Captain Larsen. Hump and Maud, having recognized each other as peers, engage in conversation as an agitated Captain Laren looks on.
Hump is alarmed to discover the empty Ghost beached on the shore, but takes advantage of the situation to gather much needed supplies. Hump encounters a disheveled Larsen, who proceeds to tell him of the events that followed his escape from Ghost.
Brunhild is welcomed home.
While sitting on a fallen column, the four friends admire the moonlight.
Monica and Bertha visit their new neighbors, Mrs. Westmacott and her nephew, and determine she is a very unpleasant woman.
Laurence invites the girls to go camping.
Jurgis and Ona celebrate their wedding, however so little money is received from the guest that Jurgis can't pay for the reception. Jurgis vows to work harder. Jurgis and Ona's past in Lithuania is revisited.
The affairs of Mrs. Beaufort and Ellen are the topic of conversation at the van der Luydens home. Newland is greatly affected by news concerning Ellen.
Polynesia, having already convinced the doctor to take a vacation, attempts to influence even more. Doctor Dolittle and his friends begin their trip home.
Garces searches for the truth behind the animals he encounters who laugh at night in the woods. He heard incredible stories during an afternoon hunt.
