Thorneycroft Huxtable, a principal at a New England prep school, comes to Holmes with the news that a student has been kidnapped. They must do what they can to track him down.

This story continues the adventure of the circus from the previous chapter. Marmaduke gets lost and meets many different characters in the circus. He meets Tody the Clown who helps him find the Toyman.
Christy reacts to his commission and discovers the ship he is assigned to command.

The three boys find their missing companion in Albany when they arrive. John caught a ride on the Varmint and then they speak about how the boats compare and talk about the different canals they can explore.
The author describes what the stranger tells him of Spaceland.
Ruggedo and the Royal Chamberlain look through the magic spyglass and see the adventurers and the dragon coming up the tube. The Nome King and his Chamberlain set out for the tube to attack when the adventurers when the emerge from the tube.
The rest of the girls are introduced to Sara Crewe. Sara's first French lesson does not go as Miss Minchin planned.
An unusually strong and hungry youngster makes his way in the world.
The rescue is completed, at some risk to themselves. They find out the story of little Joe, and consider themselves happy to help such a child. Danger still lingers nearby as they wait to see what the sharpie will do next.
Worth and Quorum seach for the missing Sumner.
The remaining crew considers Parker's suggestion, eventually drawing lots to make the fateful decision.
