Will's mention of children causes Carol to become despondent. A new world conflict erupts, but the people of Gopher Prairie fail to take notice.
The group approaches the hut, hoping it's occupants will be able guide them out of the swamp. Alice and Ruth are surprised by the arrival of two acquaintances.

However, both of their pies become mixed up and each becomes dreadfully afraid that they have eaten a patty-pan.

A priest looks for lodging in the night and is given shelter by an old woman. She goes to gather more wood, and she tells him not to look in the back room. Curiosity gets the better of him, and he looks in the room and sees horrible things. He realizes she is the Goblin of Adachigahara, and flees. She chases him through the night, but he prays to Buddha and keeps running. Morning dawns, making the goblin disappear, and the priest is safe.
Ruth writes a letter to her friend Edna. Ruth and Mark go to the auction. The court awarded the Nancy Bell five thousand dollars.
Smollett and the others wade ashore and discover a pirate they have killed. They reload their guns at the stockade. Tom is shot and they convince him that he will die nobly. They fight off gunfire from the pirates and meet up with Jim again.
The group sets out in search of the balloonists. There are hints that a storm may be brewing. Hope of finding the lost men has almost been lost when something is spotted. The boys meet up with a steamer.
The girls are helped by Hank Belton. They discover that he hires out men for work and Grace hopes to hear news of her brother. Mr. Hammond takes the girls to his camp.
