Phileas' game of whist is suddenly interrupted by Colonel Proctor, who he quickly challenges to a duel. A surprise attack forces the two to temporarily forget their differences. Passepartout is successful in his mission once again.
A white fairy befriends a young prince. The fairy gave the prince a ring and tells him that whenever he did something unkind, the ring would prick his finger and he would lose her friendship. After several unkind deeds she turned him into a dog. Only changing his ways would bring him back to his handsome self.
A sperm whale is sighted.
As Chillingworth walks away, Hester goes to find Pearl. She realizes that, although it is a sin to do so, she hates her husband. Hester and Pearl discuss the meaning of the scarlet letter.
Lottie is caught listening to Sara's story telling, upsetting Lavinia.

Dorian and Lord Henry discuss many things, including Dorian’s attempt to be a better person. Lord Henry tells Dorian not to change, and expresses his wish to recapture the youth that Dorian has seemingly managed to keep.
Cruncher is sent to attend the trial of Charles Darnay.
Matthew summons his courage to update Anne's wardrobe. Anne receives a gift from Diana's aunt.
The men charge the enemy quickly, but eventually lose steam. The lieutenant continues to drive the men to fight on. Henry, Wilson, and the lieutenant lead the rest of the regiment toward the enemy position. Henry carries the regiment colors after the color sergeant is mortally wounded.
