In a fit of rage Hindley throws Hareton over the balcony, fortunately Heathcliff is there to catch him. Catherine agrees to marry Edgar and tells Nelly, Heathcliff overhears their conversation and leaves Wuthering Heights for three years. Upset when Heathcliff leaves Catherine waits out in the rain for him, catches a fever, and almost dies; during her recovery Mr. and Mrs. Linton catch her fever and they both die. Catherine and Edgar marry three years after their death, and Nelly moves to Thrushcross Grange with them.
The Preface explains the circumstances that led to the novel being written. The Letters are from Robert Walton to his sister, detailing his travels. In the fourth letter, Walton tells his sister about seeing a strange creature, and then about finding a starved man who he takes aboard and convinces to tell his story.
Mrs. Michelson is sent away on a hopeless errand. Upon her return, she and Laura are informed that Marian has left for Limmeridge house. Laura embarks in pursuit of her sister. Mrs. Michelson is made aware of the extent of Sir Percival's deceit.

Agnes warns David to be cautious of Steerforth. Uriah reveals his intentions towards Agnes.
